*Not directly associated with Thornton Junior High as the program is being held at Los Cerritos Community Center due to lack of faculty availability. However, this program is only for Thornton Junior High Students!
DISCLAIMER: Because of limited bandwidth, we will be capping this year’s program at ~30-36 6th-8th students. Students will be admitted on a first come, first serve basis with limited priority given to students who participated in Thornton’s program last year. All students beyond capacity will be put on a waitlist.
We’re excited to start Fremont Debate Academy’s 3rd annual Speech and Debate program this year!
This year, we’re running a 9 week long competitive debate program focusing on a debate format called Public Forum at Los Cerritos Community Center. Students will learn various structured forms of argumentation, and research techniques. Through practice sessions, drills, and mini-competitions, students’ public speaking skills will be vastly improved. The final goal will be to give students attending American a head-start into their high school debate careers!
Since 2014, FDA has also developed programs in 19 states and 8 countries, including Oregon, Arkansas, Australia, India, and more impacting 7,500+ students. In addition, Fremont Debate Academy has trained 100+ teachers from institutions like Broward County & FUSD. Since 2014, our international team of over 200 volunteers has logged over 45,000+ hours, with several volunteers receiving certification for the gold level Presidential Volunteer Service Award from FDA.
Thornton Speech and Debate sessions will be held on Wednesdays from 3:30pm to 5:00pm. There will be 9 in-person classes for this program. The start date for the in-person sessions will be February 25th in the Los Cerritos Community Center. Our last in-person session will be on April 29th and there is NO session on March 18th.
Note: Parents are responsible for picking their children up promptly at 5:00 pm right after the session.
