Debate Tryout Date (all applicants must try out): September 3rd, Room A104 (Ms. Petty Elliot’s Classroom) from 3-5:30 PM! 

Program is for 6th to 8th graders who currently attend Centerville.

Weekly sessions for accepted students will be on Tuesdays from 3:00 to 4:45 PM and continue throughout the school year. The first session will be on September 10th!

Tryouts Information

Information About Tryouts. All applicants to need try-out. We will limit enrollment for the program based on results from the tryouts.

 Tryouts will be conducted in Ms. Petty-Elliot's room (A104)  on September 3rd, 2024 from 3:00-5:30 PM  Applicants will be given a random topic at tryouts and be paired up against each other in one-on-one miniature debates, where they will be judged based on categories such as argumentation, strength of reasoning, speaking style, and their written application. Tryout debates will not have a winner or loser.

Due to the high volume of applicants, we will be splitting everyone up into cohorts, and due to this, please expect your child to wait for their tryout. In order to maintain fairness, every cohort will be given a separate topic. In addition, tryouts will be capped, so make sure to sign up ASAP!

Additional Information about Fremont Debate Academy

Fremont Debate Academy is a 501(3) international non-profit with programs run in over 19 states and 8 countries. Over the past 8 years, FDA has impacted over 5000 students, including students from Centerville for 5 years! FDA also has programs in 21+ FUSD schools, and is partnering with FUSD to bring its programs to even more schools this year.

We’ve seen the positive impact that these programs have had on our students. Our internal surveys have shown that students participating in FDA’s programs have seen a 39.1% improvement in their self-confidence & public speaking skills, a 45.9% improvement in their worldly knowledge & research skills, and 90% of students saying their participation has had a positive impact on their academic performance. 

Program Information

This year-round program will be headed by nationally ranked debaters from Washington Debate & Fremont Debate Academy, and will put an emphasis on the Middle School Public Debate format. Students will learn various structured forms of argumentation, and research techniques. Through practice sessions and drills, students’ public speaking and debate skills will be vastly improved.

Fremont Debate Academy has impacted over 5000+ elementary and middle school students over the past nine years, and students have recently placed Top 10 in the nation at the Middle School Debate Nationals!
